How to maximise your postcard printing dollars?

Have a sales message to get out? Need to notify customers of a change of address, an upcoming sale or event, or an exciting new product? Have you thought about postcard printing? Think about your daily mail - postcards catch your eye quickly and are often the first things read. Even if you aren't interested in what the postcard has to say, you probably (at least) check out the message before you toss it in the trash, whereas sales letters and mailed brochures are usually tossed out before the envelope is opened.

These tips will help you maximise your postcard printing dollars.

* Keep your message short and simple. If your message is short enough and direct enough, your customers will read and understand it on the very first glance. Your space for postcard printing is pretty limited; throwing too much information at your reader is a good way to overwhelm or confuse them. A simple, straightforward message is your best bet.

* Be careful with your quantity. You may pay more for postcard printing at a smaller quantity, but think about the alternative: ordering more cards at a lower per-card price means paying more in total for cards you may not use.

* Be smart about your mailing list. If you can't afford postcards for everyone, select the people who have a track record of responding to your offers. Target recent customers with your postcard printing -- your company will still be fresh in their minds. Target repeat customers with your postcard printing -- you already have a relationship with them.

* Use color to grab and hold your reader's attention. Marketing research shows that full color postcard printing is more effective than single color or two color processing. You may want to splurge on full color postcard printing; the results can more than pay for the cost of printing.

* Choose your coating carefully. There are different types of coating available to protect your full-color postcard printing. Aqueous coating is a fast drying, water based coating -- probably the most affordable. UV coating is a glossy, plastic finish; film lamination is a plastic film applied to your postcards. Different types of coating can change your cost dramatically.

* Make sure you know the postal regulations. You can't just cut a normal piece of paper to the right size and send it! The smallest size a postcard can be is the side of an index card -- 3.5 by 5 inches. It must have a minimum thickness of .007 inches.

* Variations in size can be a good thing or a bad thing. An oddly sized postcard can change both your postcard printing costs and your mailing costs, but it can also get you more attention from your customers because it stands out.

* Use images to help catch your reader's eye. You can purchase stock photography and choose an image that is in line with your message. Try to pick a unique image; no sense in using a picture your competitors may have used already!

* Try to time your delivery on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Why? Because mid-week mail volume tends to be lighter. If your postcard is the only thing in the mail, your readers will pay more attention to it.
