Catalogue Printing, How To Make Your Catalog A

Success...Increase Your Sales While Reducing Your Costs


Whatever type of products or services your company offers, when you have more information to get out than a brochure or flyer can hold, catalog printing is one of the most effective means of marketing. Catalogs have been designed for a wide range of purposes including sales/consumer catalogs, manuals, journals, programs, exhibition guides, reports or other multi-page booklets.

If your catalog is of a high standard it will grab your customer's attention and create the right expectation of receiving the same high standard from your product or service. Keep it creative, accurate and effective to make it look enticing. The good news is that a catalog doesn’t need to be expensively made. It can remain inexpensive and natural, but follow some simple rules:

Place a strong image on the cover
The presentation of the cover is critical to leaving a lasting impression (Magazine covers for example).

Make your catalog printing information rich, specific and appropriate
ideally each item should have a clear and brief description of 30-50 words. Mix your selling message with extra information on your subject such as product tips to make your catalog look like an informational book -- a very smart approach to boosting sales.

Use headlines, subheads and visuals
Guide your readers through your entire catalog through benefit headlines, subheads and visuals. Focus the customers’ attention on specific items. Some products may not be helpful at all. Make sure that the images of products are arranged, categorized and grouped properly -- make your catalog easy to use and follow.

Make it easy to read
Limit the number of typefaces you use, and use fonts that are easy to read. Some customers may not be patient when they find your catalog is too hard to read, they will tend to set it aside and, ultimately that will cost you sales.

Provide consistent design
Keep up a good and consistent design, stick to one illustration style throughout. A consistent layout is a mark of excellence. If you already have a design that customers like, maintain that as your consistent design.

Plan your job properly
Catalogs can be a simple brochure folded to make a four-pager, or up to 64 pages in full colour, saddle-stitched at the spine, or "perfect" bound(over 64 pages) like a colour magazine. Work backwards from the last step of your catalog printing to avoid making mistakes. Make sure that all requirements such as folding, scoring, cutting, binding etc. can be met in the initial process of printing and film output.

Choose the right paper
Choosing the right paper is another important element in creating a professional looking catalog. Choose from 115gsm or the most popular 130gsm gloss stock, or even thicker 150gsm for inside catalog pages, and combine with higher weight and thicker gloss stock for a durable cover to make your catalog very presentable.

Save money with the right size
Using standard sizes saves money. Build your own catalog in the most popular sizes A5 or A4 for your catalog printing (for more details please refer to "Full Colour Brochure Printing"). Of course, paying extra to have a custom size catalog printed will give you a distinctive marketing piece.

'Link' to your website
If you have a web site, be sure to guide your prospects to it. More people tend to go online and all transactions can be made through the internet. Each page of your catalog should include a “link” to your web site where they can find more current, in-depth information.

Call to action
Throughout your entire catalog, provide a clear call to action-- to phone, fax, send an mail, or visit a world wide web destination, etc. You can't supply too many contact options, this is where you turn your information into sales.

Include a well-designed order form
A catalog must always have an order form. Keep your order forms as simple to use and orderly as possible. A well-designed order form can be used as a worksheet to organize orders before your customers call or order via the internet.

Supply correct artwork
Make sure your artwork is correct and does not need alterations, if you supply the printing file be sure that the file you supply is to your printer’s specifications to avoid any additional costs.
